Woman who 'trashed' reception area of Nottingham Premier Inn vows not to break law again

A 29-year-old woman who 'trashed' the reception area of a Premier Inn vowed in court: "I won't break the law again." Sabrina Winfield addressed magistrates as they handed her a 12-month conditional discharge over the criminal damage she inflicted at the Castle Bridge Road hotel on Castle Marina, Nottingham.

Winfield damaged glass panel doors, the reception area and a display panel on Boxing Day, Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard on Wednesday (December 28). Prosecutor Sanjay Jareth said Winfield, of Honiton Road, Strelley, had been living at the hotel when she 'trashed' the reception area.

The incident was captured on CCTV and then photographed by police. In a prepared statement, Winfield admitted she caused the damage. However, she blamed her drinking, and believed her actions were as a result of her psychosis and voices in her head which were controlling her.

Winfield has 11 previous convictions for 34 offences, and remains subject to an alcohol treatment requirement from a previous court sentencing. "By the defendant's own admission, alcohol is an issue," Mr Jareth told magistrates. "From what we are seeing here, she is not really addressing it; as she is getting to a stage where she is trashing the place she is housed. The photograph says it all.

"It won't be cheap to repair or replace the damage," he added. Colin Wilson, of Bhatia Best solicitors, who mitigated, said: "This is a mental health issue, rather than alcohol alone. She turns to alcohol when she has depression. The hotel was a temporary measure."

Winfield was sober on Christmas Day watching films but, by Boxing Day lunchtime, had become depressed. With an appointment on the horizon with probation to tackle her alcohol issues, magistrates decided on the conditional discharge after Winfield entered a guilty plea to causing criminal damage. They ordered she pay £350 towards costs of the damage caused to the reception area.

Winfield told justices from the dock: "I'm grateful. Have a good New Year. I won't break the law again."
