Woman who 'felt footbridge moving underneath her' narrowly escaped its collapse

A woman claims she felt a footbridge moving under her before she narrowly escaped its collapse.

Julie Powell, 34, was walking home with her dog when she noticed the strength of the current at Millmead Lock, Shalford, Surrey.

She began filming to show her husband, before having to run from Guildford's Millmead Lock footbridge as it collapsed into the River Wey, Surrey Live reports.

The incident happened at around 2.45pm on Saturday, November 2.

The river level has dropped significantly since the bridge's collapse.

Local authorities, firefighters and police were at the scene in the evening to cordon the area off from the public.

Mrs Powell said: “I was walking back home with my dog and started filming on the bridge because I could see the water and the current was really strong.

“I was focusing on the video on my phone and then I felt the bridge moving under my feet.

“I walk this way often and the current on the left of the bridge seemed really unusual.

"I wanted to take a video to show my husband, but then it all happened really quickly and suddenly it fell. My dog ran off to my right and first alerted me.

“It was scary. It is fine now, but you do think about what might have happened.”

The video shows just how close her escape was as she turns to see the bridge crumble into the river.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at around 2.45pm.

A spokesman said: “We were called to the scene, but left it in the hands of of the police and the local authority.

“Our concern was the flooding caused by the debris, but we have passed it over.”

Severe weather conditions battered Surrey on Saturday morning and led to three bonfire night events having to be cancelled or postponed due to safety concerns.

Train services were also severely disrupted.
