Woman who brutally murdered her mother then hid her body in cupboard under the stairs faces life sentence

A woman who brutally stabbed her mother to death then hid her body in a cupboard under the stairs faces a life sentence.

Cassandra Scott, 36, was unanimously found guilty of murder after she knifed her mum Beverley Scott 10 times in a drug fuelled rage.

She didn't call for an ambulance, and her mother's body was only found more than two months after the murder, covered in plastic sheets, bed covers and old curtains.

Cassandra claimed her mother had become angry when she revealed she was planning on moving back in with her ex.

After subjecting her mother to a vicious attack in the kitchen of their Longsight home, with two blows piercing the back of her heart, she left her to die then hid her under the stairs.

A housing officer discovered Beverley's body after concerns were raised about her whereabouts.

Her daughter had been telling people that her mother was in rehab, or that she had died in hospital.

The pair lived together at Holker Close in Longsight, and both used drugs including crack cocaine.

Cassandra claimed she was acting in self defence, and said she had disarmed her mother before stabbing her.

But a jury took just over an hour to unanimously convict her of murder.

She will be sentenced tomorrow, and faces a life sentence.

Manchester Crown Court has heard that an argument had developed between the pair in the kitchen of the property.

Beverley was said to have become 'enraged' after Cassandra revealed she was planning on moving back in with her ex-partner.

Cassandra admitted stabbing her mother during the confrontation, but said she acted after her mother was 'coming at me'.

The exact date of Beverley's death is not clear, but it is thought to have occurred between March 25 and April 1 last year.

Her body was found on June 11.

Pathology reports revealed she had suffered 10 stab wounds to her back, two of which penetrated through her chest cavity and the back of her heart.

Concerns had been raised for her welfare, after she had not been seen.

Beverley was usually often seen out walking her dog, and a phone appointment with a support worker went unanswered.

Cassandra had moved in with her mother in March last year, after splitting from her partner.

After her mother's death, Cassandra told a neighbour she was in rehab, and she later told an acquaintance her mum had 'passed away in hospital'.

Prosecutors described the killing as a 'persistent' attack', with at least one stab wound being inflicted with 'severe' force.

Giving evidence, Cassandra said of the confrontation: "I just remember we was arguing and she picked up the knife, I just remember her coming at me.

"She just put it towards my neck.

"It just happened so quick, everything happened so fast.

"Obviously somehow I got the knife off her."

Cassandra denied that she wanted to kill her mother, saying she 'loved' her.

Asked why she 'hid' the body in the cupboard, she said: "I don't know, I probably just didn't want it to be real.

"I knew that she would get found."

The judge, Mr Justice Calver, is expected to pass sentence tomorrow afternoon.
