Woman watched in horror as fire ripped through home in suspected petrol bomb attack

A woman has described the fear she felt as a blaze ripped through her home following a suspected petrol bomb attack.

Zara Groves', 51, home was ravaged by flames in an alleged fire bomb attack on March 24.

The fitness instructor, who was inside the Llandudno property at the time, states that she is plagued by terror following the incident and can not not be left by herself, North Wales Live reports.

She said: "I keep crying all the time, am absolutely heartbroken and am so frightened I have to be around people or talking to people all the time right now."

Zara says that she is "lucky to be alive" after being confronted by the fire when she opened a door inside the property. Thankfully, Zara was able to raise the alarm and emergency services were called to the address shortly before 10pm.

Though she escaped without physical injuries, Zara says she is now faced with the psychological impact of the incident. She believes she was the victim of a random attack, and says she has "no idea" who would do this.

North Wales Live spoke to Zara at the end of 2021, after she received cruel comments about her weight. The businesswoman took to social media following last week's incident, to tell followers she was "trying to think of the positives" following the ordeal.

Sharing a video of the damage inside her home, Zara wrote: "So the most frightening thing of my life happened last night - someone put a petrol bomb through my door. This is what my house looks like now.

"I have to say I cannot believe the kindness being offered to me from everyone on my estate and of course my friends and family. and I pray they catch this person because someone could have died."

Pictures and videos show extensive damage inside the fire-ravaged property.

Heartbroken by what has happened, Zara has thanked the local community for their "phenomenal support". She says she has been "overwhelmed" with the kindness people have shown.

Zara's close friend Sarah Clark has set up a fundraising page to raise money for the repairs. In a message on the fundraising site, Sarah wrote: "As well as the mental anguish caused when you're just quietly going about your business in your own home and a petrol bomb is thrown through your letterbox, there is the added torment of seeing your home decimated.

"Ceilings need replacing, there are fire damaged electrics to be repaired/replaced, the front door was blown off and obliterated, smoke damage is everywhere.......and so much more. We are reaching out to everyone who knows Zara to see if you could help support her during this distressing time.

"We are looking for donations of anything you can spare please, to help to repair her house. Additionally, if anybody lives locally and would like to help, such as any tradesman who could give some time perhaps and anyone who could spare time to help with the clean-up it would be really, really appreciated."

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 21.46 to Ffordd Dewi, Llandudno, Conwy, two crews from Llandudno attended and used two hose reel jets and two sets of breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. The fire was thought to be deliberate."

On Saturday (March 27), North Wales Police issued a statement confirming a 40-year-old man had been charged with arson with intent to endanger life following a fire on Ffordd Dewi in Llandudno. The man was remanded to appear before Llandudno Magistrates Court - you can read the full statement here.
