Woman to appear in court after allegedly throwing a garden gnome at neighbour's head in Cork

A woman who allegedly threw a garden gnome at her neighbour’s head after knocking loudly on her door during the night is due to appear before Cork District Court for a full hearing of the case against her next month.

Laura Malone of St Michael’s Lawn, Mahon, in Cork appeared before the court in December 2022 when an outline of the alleged incident was given by Inspector Brendan McKenna. Ms Malone was charged with assault causing harm to the other woman.

Inspector McKenna said that the injured party alleges that the incident unfolded when she opened the door of her home in Cork at 3am on August 12, 2021. He said that the injured party was at home in bed when she heard a “loud banging” at her front door.

“She looked out and saw her friend and neighbour, Laura Malone, outside.

“She went to answer the front door to Ms Malone who was standing four or five feet away with her hands behind her back. She said, ‘Do you want a fight?’ Without warning she threw a pre-cast garden gnome at [the householder] striking her in the head.

“She was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital. She had to have six stitches to her lip and she had a large haematoma to her forehead.”

The court heard that the DPP had directed that the case against the 34-year-old was deemed suitable for hearing at district court level.

Judge Kelleher today adjourned the case until February 21 at Cork District Court. He previously accepted jurisdiction to hear the case when he heard the alleged facts. Ms Malone is contesting the allegations made against her.
