A woman has died after being swept off rocks at Lake Macquarie.

Police said emergency services were called to the Pink Caves south of Catherine Hill Bay at 12.30 pm on Thursday after reports two women had been swept into the water by a freak wave.

One woman was washed back onto the rocks, sufferings cuts and bruises.

A 26-year-old man at the scene jumped into the water to help but he also got into trouble before he and the other woman were picked up by surf life savers on a jet ski.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the woman onshore at Moonee Beach but she died a short time later.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
