A woman is in hospital after the "partial amputation" of her arm during a dog attack in the Northern Territory early this morning.

St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway told ABC Radio Darwin that emergency services were alerted to the attack in Katherine South at about 4:30am.

"My understanding – and it's only just happened recently – is that there was a partial amputation to that lady's arm," Mr Garraway said.

"It's obviously quite a horrific injury and obviously quite terrifying to be involved in that type of thing."

The woman was rushed to Katherine Hospital with serious injuries.

Mr Garraway said she would likely be flown to Royal Darwin Hospital later this morning via CareFlight.

The dog was last seen at the intersection of Lucy Street and Riverbank Drive and police are urging residents to exercise caution.

"A dark brown dog with no collar has attacked a woman, causing injuries," NT Police said in a Facebook post.
