It's no surprise that shopping can sometimes make us feel better when we're down, causing a dopamine hit that can temporarily lift our mood.
But if you're trying to start 2023 by being more careful with money, you might be wondering how to nip your impulsive spending habits in the bud so that you can save cash.
Luckily, one TikTokker has shared how she manages to keep in control and stray away from needlessly spending money in the shops - and it'll make you feel good about yourself too.
Heidi, also known as @duchessofthrift on TikTok, frequently posts about life as a mum trying to be smarter with money as she shares her techniques with her 36,000 followers.
And although her content is often focused on getting through the cost of living, she's admitted she often needlessly buys clothes to wear even though she has plenty of them already.
In order to curb her spending, which she's aiming to do until March, Heidi has suggested a simple technique that improves your mental health as well.
In the video, she said: "I've gone through my wardrobe and I've written a list of the things that when I wear them, I feel nice. They bring me joy, they make me feel happy, they're my favourite things.
"When I feel the itch [to buy clothes] and I think I've got nothing to wear, I'll pick something from that list that I know makes me feel really, really nice.
"I feel good in it, it fits me good, so I'll work my way down that list and rewear the things that make me feel good. In that moment, where the itch comes in, you forget about your favourite things - you just overlook."
In the comments, people praised Heidi for her idea, and some even suggested their own ways of trying to curb their impulsive spending habits.
One person said: "I'm addicted to charity shops but what I do now is "one in one out" to stop myself buying stuff I don't need."
Another commented: "Always lovely to rediscover old classics from the back of the wardrobe! It's surprising what we can find!"
And a third wrote: "When we buy something we visualise a situation, which these days NEVER come...far better to enjoy and use what we already have!"
