SAMUT PRAKAN: A woman stabbed a young man, a friend of her son, to death at a workers' camp in Bang Phli district on Saturday night, claiming she had done so in self-defence.

Pol Capt Veerapong Apaiwong, an investigator at Bang Phli police station, said the incident occurred shortly before 8pm at a camp for construction company workers at Moo 8 village in tambon Bang Chalong.

When the police arrived at the scene to investigate, they found Kittisak Piew-on, 26, from Nakhon Pathom province, lying dead in front of the camp with six stab wounds in the torso.

Somsangad Saisaen, 49, surrendered to the police with a 30-centimetre long knife soaked with blood. She admitted to stabbing the young man with the knife.

Ms Somsangad said while resting in her room she heard people yelling. She came outside and saw her son, Vorakan Panmanee, run to the room. Behind him was Kittisak holding a wooden stick.

The woman said she tried to stop Kittisak from hurting her son, but the man hit her with the stick. She grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him many times until he fell to the ground. She claimed she acted in self-defence.

Mr Vorakan, her son, told the police that while he, Kittisak and some other friends were having a drinking session, he asked Kittisak for some marijuana, knowing that he had it. A heated quarrrel ensued, followed by a fight. He said that being no match for Kittisak's strength, he ran to the room to ask his mother for help, leading to her stabbing Kittisak.

Ms Somsangad and Mr Vorakan were detained and taken to Bang Phli police station for further questioning. The woman was initially charged with intentional murder.
