Woman 'stabbed to death' near canal as cops hunt killer on the run

Police are chasing a killer on the run after a woman was 'stabbed to death' this afternoon.

Emergency services raced to the Ashton Canal in Droylsden, eastern Manchester, after the alarm was raised at around 12pm on Friday. The woman tragically passed away after a male suspect who allegedly stabbed her ran off in an unknown direction.

The woman, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services at 12:43pm. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, this was around 45 minutes after police received reports of a stabbing in the area.

Police were reportedly overheard telling local residents that the area, near the bridge by Edge Lane, was now a "major crime scene". A police chopper and several cop cars and vans were reportedly seen searching the area, in an apparent search for the suspect.

Chief Superintendent Phil Davies, Tameside’s District Commander, said in GMP's latest statement on the incident: "Our specialist family liaison officers are currently with the victim’s family to support them through what is an incredibly difficult time and we will do everything we can to ensure we locate the person responsible for this callous attack.

The suspect reportedly vanished without a trace (MEN)

“GMP officers and our Major Incident Team are working extremely hard to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident. At this stage in our enquiries, we are unable to confirm whether the offender was known to the victim and we are working with the victim’s family and members of the public to establish the circumstances of this incident."

"I understand this news will come as a great shock to those in the Droylsden community. In response, you will see an increased presence of our local officers, who will be patrolling the local community on-foot and in vehicles providing added reassurance to the community."

He also urged any eyewitnesses to come forward and speak to cops to assist their investigation. Anyone with information, CCTV or video footage regarding this incident or who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area at around 12pm today, contact GMP by calling 101 or visiting www.gmp.police.uk, quoting log 1353 of June 2, 2023. Information can be shared anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
