A mum has been shot dead on a secluded road by her ex-partner as she celebrated her 32nd birthday.
The body of Michele Bernardes - who has been survived by a 12-year-old daughter - was found after she was shot by her former boyfriend.
While it still remains unclear as to what the woman was doing on the road - which leads to the monument Christ the Redeemer of Pouso Alegre in the municipality of Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais State, Brazil - the victim was found by Brazilian police with an injury to the head.
According to reports, Ms Bernardes was found with an injury that was sustained to her forehead, and a bullet wound to her neck.
Officers located the victim’s ex-partner, 36, in his car just 45 miles (73 kilometres) from the crime scene, on the MG-295 highway in Bueno Brandão.
When police approached his vehicle, where the murder is suspected of taking place, he shot himself in the head.
Subsequently, the unnamed man was immediately rushed to hospital, where he currently remains in a serious condition.
While initial reports had first reported that Ms Bernardes had been shot in the head, the Fire Department later confirmed that the bullet wound was to her neck while the forehead injury - which was caused by a heavy blow or fall.
The victim had also been threatened by her former partner just two days before the horror incident, and had taken out protective measures against him, her family had said.
However, motive for the alleged murder is currently unclear.
The police investigation is ongoing.
