Woman shares what life is like in a 'Mommune' raising kids with other single mums

Six months ago, 32-year-old Kristin Batykefer's world was turned upside down when she discovered her husband was having an affair.

The couple had been living and travelling around together on a bus, along with their four-year-old daughter and a dog and the mum had no idea what she would do next or where to go.

Thankfully fate stepped in and some family friends invited Kristin, her daughter and their beloved pooch to come and stay with them at their home in Florida, USA, as they had extra room.

But a couple of months into her stay, another of her friends' lives ended up taking a similar path and she and her two children were also in need of a new home. Thus, the 'Mommune' was formed.

Kristin says the experience of living with other mums has been 'awesome' (Kristin Batykefer)

Speaking to The Mirror, Kristin explained exactly what a Mommune is and what makes it so great, in her opinion.

She said: "It's a play on words, it's moms in a commune, a community of moms.

"We're three moms living under one roof right now. It's a married couple, Ben and Cleta, who are empty nesters and it's their house and then me and my best friend Tessa, her two babies who are four and one, and my daughter."

While it might surprise some to learn that there's a man in the Mommune, Kristin says he is a great asset to the group and they call him their 'unicorn'.

"He's a unicorn, he's proof that there are good men out there," she jokes.

"He works hard, he helps his wife with anything she asks him and the kids love him, and after coming out of two relationships that weren't the best, it's good for us to see him and his wife, they've been married for 27 years now and together for almost 30, so it's proof that it can happen."

Kristin convinced Tessa to move to Florida so they could go through divorces and heal together (Kristin Batykefer)

Kristin admits that Tessa was initially reluctant to up and move from Colorado to Florida to join her, but she managed to convince her in the end.

"A couple of months into living here my best friend called me up, she was living out in Colorado and she was like 'This isn't working out'. She and her husband went through a similar kind of situation and they were trying to fix it but it just wasn't working and she was going to divorce him," she explained.

"I told her to come and live here with me. It would be perfect, we can heal together, get divorced together, and raise our babies together.

"So she came and the original idea was she was going to come here and we were going to start looking for a place but rent is just insanely high right now anywhere around here, so we're looking to buy our own place but we need to wait until our divorces go through."

And while they wait, the women are seemingly living their best lives.

The group all help each other out covering childcare as needed, as well as taking care of each other when times are tough.

Kristin recently went viral on TikTok after sharing how the other mums helped her when she was feeling unwell.

The video, which has garnered over one million views on her @beachykefer account, shows how her friends baked her some of her favourite cookies from scratch, made her soup and took care of her daughter so she wouldn't have to worry and could rest.

She captioned the video saying it was a "support system like no other".

And this bond she has formed with the others is her 'favourite' part of living in the unique space.

"We don't have a set thing but we alternate cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner, we make coffee or tea for each other in the morning, we just help each other out," she says.

"I think my favourite part is when you're in a marriage you kind of expect your partner to help you and so when they don't you're disappointed and it then causes resentment and all the bad things that can happen in a relationship, but in this situation, we don't expect each other to help but we just do because we're all moms and we understand how much of a workload being a mother is on top of everything else."

"It's been awesome," she adds.

And in case you were wondering, yes it is like having one big sleepover with your besties.

"We do each other's hair and nails and have Netflix nights when the kids are with their dads and it's just so much fun.

"We're going through what should be and what is a really sad, life-changing moment but being together through it all has made it so much better.

"I couldn't imagine doing it any other way."
