Woman screamed for help after tower block fire left her stranded in 'pitch-black' flat

A woman was forced to scream for help after being trapped in her "pitch black" flat after a serious fire at a tower block in Coventry.

Others yelled desperately from the seventh floor of Nauls Mill House, where a blaze left residents without water and power on Saturday night.

The anonymous woman tried to leave the block the following morning but was struggling because the stairs were covered in water and the lifts weren't working.

But she thankfully made it outside the blaze-hit property despite pushing a pram.

She told CoventryLive : "I slept here last night, but there is no electricity this morning so I am going to stay with a friend."

She added that she "wanted to come down" and was screaming for help as the flats had been plunged into darkness with the emergency lights seemingly not working. Another resident described the building as 'pitch black'.

The woman had been struggling without 'even cold water' all morning as Citizen Housing scramble to arrange temporary accommodation for infuriated residents.

Another resident, who lives on the 10th floor of Nauls Mill House, said: "I was watching the TV last night (April 16) and I heard shouting and I thought there was a fight out here.

"Normally on a Saturday night you would think there was a fight or something. I didn't think nothing of it, I looked out and saw nothing.

"It was not until I heard the word ' fire ' I thought 'did I hear that right?'. And then I looked up and I saw it.

"All of the tenants last night were infuriated - there was no contact between Citizen Housing and the rest of us.

"And there were kids down here in cars that could not get in to the building, there were no blankets for them."

He added: "It is the kids, I don't care about myself. It was the kids that were left in cars, the kids that were left stood in the car park and people were still there at 2am when I left.

"Last night there was a guy down here that lives on the 13th or 14th floor, he was still in his car at 2am when they let us back in the block.

"I went to grab my bike and grab some clothes for myself and my partner and I come down and bless him he was still in his car with his partner and his two kids."
