Woman’s clever trick makes long-haul flights comfier - and it won’t cost you extra

A simple long-haul hack will make your journeys comfier and doesn't have to cost you a penny.

Being stuck on a lengthy plane journey with little to entertain you during the long hours ahead is not the most fun part of a holiday.

That is especially true if you're someone who finds sleeping sat up, surrounded by strangers a little difficult.

A TikToker has produced a trick to help you get 40 winks and to make the journey go a little quicker.

Travel influencer @wandering__around has gone viral with the trick, which only requires a scarf to deploy.

She uses it to construct a makeshift footrest that can be used to get comfy.

"This is my long-haul flight hack," the TikToker says in the video. "Tie a large knot in both ends of a sarong, scarf or light blanket.

"Open your tray table and place the knots onto the outside and close. Pop your feet up and relax. This was super comfortable for sleeping. And I haven't been asked to remove it for take off or landing on any flight."

The trick looks perfect for people who like to ball up or adopt the foetal position when bedding down for the night, as it lets you raise up your legs.

One of the downsides - as with all sleeping positions on a plane - is that people without exceptional circulation may find their legs achy and suffering from pins and needles.

The tension caused by the scarf may also pull down on the passenger in front's seat, causing it to wobble and them to be disrupted.

If you're planning to sleep during a flight, it's worth packing a few essentials to make the experience easier.

A travel pillow can make all the difference - we've rounded up the best ones to help out - while a large scarf can also double up as an extra blanket.

If you're a light sleeper, you may also want to consider an eye mask and ear plugs to create an environment that's as serene as possible.

If ear plugs aren't comfortable and you frequently travel by plane, it's worth investing in a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones.

Handy for when you want to watch a film or show on your gadgets, handy when it's time to block out the general noise and reduce the sound of the engines.

If you can book your seat ahead of time, try and bag a window seat. Not only does it offer something to lean on so you can get comfortable, but it also means you won't be disturbed if your fellow passengers need to get up.

Flight attendants may wake you up to offer you food or drinks.

Let them know that you're planning to sleep and that you don't want to be woken up for these, and it makes life a little easier for everyone involved.

If the seatbelt sign comes on during the flight, flight attendants often walk through the aisles to check people have followed the rule.

If you're asleep and the seat belt isn't visible, for safety reasons they may have to wake you up.

Wrapping up in your blanket and fastening your seatbelt on top means they can check without needing to disturb you.
