Woman’s body ‘lay undiscovered for days in Woolwich flat’

A manhunt is underway after a young woman was found dead at home on Valentine’s Day in southeast London.

Neighbours said the 31-year-old’s body lay undiscovered for several days in the flat before police arrived in Congleton Grove, Woolwich at 8.25pm on Monday.

A post-mortem examination will be held on Wednesday but police were unable to confirm her cause of death.

Officers believe they know the woman’s identity and urgent efforts are being made to inform her family.

Met homicide detectives have launched an investigation.

On Wednesday morning, officers guarded her front door in The Willows block of flats with bags of forensic evidence piled up outside.

One resident, who didn’t wish to be named, told the Standard: “There’s no way she deserved this. Everyone knows her around here.

“Police told us she had been lying there for at least a couple of days before she was found.

“It’s my worst fear, no one checks up on each other anymore. Everyone is too scared to speak about it. She has been murdered and left there.

“I’ve never felt safe in this block, it’s a complete blind spot for police.”

Another neighbour added: “She was a very good neighbour, she’s lived here since she was young. It’s so sad.

“She was living on her own in there. I think she was single but she had boyfriends on and off. Her mother lives nearby.”
