Woman runs out in her pyjamas to help driver caught in hit and run crash

A community "sprang to action" to help a young driver after a horror hit and run.

Eyewitnesses of a horror hit and run described how a bustling community sprang into action to help the young driver. Merseyside Police was called to the Baltic Quarter on Thursday, August 18 at around 8.40pm following reports of a crash involving a Range Rover, a Seat Ibiza and a parked, unoccupied Kia Picanto.

The police confirmed slight injuries were reported to the driver of the Seat while the Range Rover made off without stopping. But eyewitnesses told the ECHO about the community efforts to help the injured driver and to close the road.

A picture shared with the ECHO showed the Seat with smashed windows while various debris lay across Jamaica Street. An eyewitness of the crash said "the driver was super lucky" and "it could have been a fatality".

She added "the community sprang into action" and were led by Delia, the landlady of Hobo Kiosk, who 'snapped into warrior woman mode".

Delia, who has been landlady at the pub for four years, told the ECHO: "All I heard was this massive bang. I knew it was vehicle related so I ran out to see what I could do. Lots of residents and people from the Baltic Hotel came out.

"I asked people to call the emergency services and we basically stopped traffic from coming up and down the road as we didn't want anyone driving through the debris. The driver was a young girl - she was very lucky as her injuries were not too serious but the car was a write-off.

"The main thing for me was how the community came out and everyone was so helpful. Everyone was concerned. There was a young woman training to be a paramedic who came out in her pyjamas and spent some time with the lady in the car."

Delia added the lady was taken into the pub where some regulars sat with her while they waited for her dad to drive from Bradford to pick her up. Delia said: "The girl was very, very shaky. Luckily she was okay but the noise was so loud it must have involved a big car."

Delia praised the actions of the police who were on the scene quickly and helped with the tidy up of the road. But she added it was the community effort which she was most happy to see.

She told the ECHO : "We're a community pub and we're proud of the community around us. We also had people from outside the city in the pub who witnessed how everyone came together.

"An instance like this where people come together to support and help each other is a real positive thing."

Merseyside Police is appealing for information regarding the incident. A spokesperson for the police said: "If you witnessed this incident or captured a dark Range Rover in the area around this time on dashcam or other devices, please contact us @MerpolCC or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with reference 2200609377."
