Woman rescued from Outlander beauty spot after slipping 40-feet in to gorge

A woman had to be rescued from a popular beauty spot featured in the hit TV series Outlander after she slipped 40-feet down a glen and became stranded.

She was walking near to the Devil’s Pulpit, in Finnich Glen, near Killearn, on Monday morning when she lost her footing and slipped down an embankment.

Once in the glen, she was unable to make her way back out due to the wet and slippery conditions and a rescue mission was launched.

Around 20 volunteers from Lomond Mountain Rescue Team gathered and carried out a technical rope rescue.

The incident happened shortly after 8.30am. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service requested the assistance of the rescue team.

A Lomond MRT spokesperson said: “The initial assessment by a Swift Water Rescue Technician was quickly followed by extraction by Lomond MRT before being handed over to the Scottish Ambulance Service. The stand down was given at 9.54am.”

Shortly after the drama, the team were called into action again. At around 11.30am the Lomond MRT were called to an ongoing incident being attended by the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat and Scottish Air Ambulance with an individual suffering an allergic reaction.

Given the location of the casualty on the West Highland Way, two mountain rescue vehicles were deployed to bring the casualty back to Rowardennan for onward assessment.

The spokesperson added: “Many thanks to all agencies involved today and to the employers who allow mountain rescue team members to leave work at short notice to attend callouts.

“Special thanks to the Rowardennan Hotel for hot drinks after the stand down – very much appreciated.”
