Woman pushed to ground and handbag robbed in Dun Laoghaire - as brave witnesses tackle thief

This is the shocking moment an elderly woman was mugged and knocked to the ground in broad daylight in south Dublin yesterday.

Video footage of the incident shows the victim, wearing a red coat, walking along the footpath on George’s Street Upper in Dun Laoghaire at 3.30pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The clip shows an unidentified woman approaching the lady from behind. She picks up her pace to a jog before suddenly grabbing her handbag.

The force of the tussle knocks the victim over and she rolls onto the road as the alleged thief runs off down the street with the handbag.

However, two brave members of the public who witnessed the incident managed to intervene and stop the alleged thief in her tracks.

One woman further down the street, who was wearing a green coat, sees the alleged thief approaching her and grabs her to stop her from running away. She then grabs the handbag back off her as the woman gives up and runs away.

Meanwhile, a man, who was standing nearby making a phone call, rushes to help the elderly lady on the ground.

The clip shows the victim signal to the thief running away with her handbag and the man then chases her down the street.

Gardai have since arrested a woman, aged in her 30s, in relation to the incident and she is being questioned by gardai at Dundrum Garda Station.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: "Gardai are investigating an alleged theft that occurred on George’s Street Upper, Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin at approximately 3:30pm on Wednesday 2nd November 2022.

"A female, 30s, was later arrested in relation to this incident and conveyed to Dundrum Garda Station. Investigations are ongoing."
