Woman on night out collapses in bar toilets after two drinks and dies in hospital

A young woman has died after collapsing on a night out with pals from a heart condition.

Amanda Peake, who was in her early 30s, was found unresponsive at the KG Sports Bar in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

She had left her table to go to the loo on September 18, 2021.

Amanda had drank two alcoholic drinks and a small amount of cocaine, and an inquest into her death was told.

She was then found collapsed by two people in the bar toilets, YorkshireLive reports.

They called emergency services, who along with the police cleared the scene and started CPR.

Amanda had been living with a heart condition and "could have passed away at any time", the inquest heard.

It is not clear if she knew she had a heart problem.

Amanda, from Barnsley, was rushed to hospital but sadly died an hour later, despite the best efforts from medical staff.

Assistant Coroner for South Yorkshire Tanyka Rawden said while the cocaine may have contributed to her death, it did not cause it.

The inquest heard how Amanda had struggled in the past with depression after experiencing financial difficulties. She had also taken overdoses in the past.

Recording a narrative verdict, Ms Rawden made it clear that while the cocaine contributed to her death, it did not cause it.

She said the pathologist had told her Amanda had been suffering from acute myocardial ischemia - a condition that reduces the heart’s ability to pump blood. She also had heart disease.

Ms Rawden said: "It feels wrong to say that this was a drug-related death, because also, as the pathologist tells me, effectively Amanda could have passed away at any time, particularly if she was under any physical stress.

"So, although it has contributed to her death, the cocaine use hasn't directly caused her death."
