A woman suffered a serious eye injury when a friend hit her with a glass during a night out in Hamilton.
Scott Murray struck out after the woman threw her drink at him, soaking him.
She needed 11 stitches in a facial wound, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard on Friday.
Murray, 28, of Limekilnburn Road, Quarter, admitted assaulting the woman to her severe injury at Bar Milano in the Avonbridge Hotel on June 5 last year.
Neil Thomson, prosecuting, described the pair as "long term friends".
He told the court: "They were with other friends in the bar that evening.
"Ill-tempered remarks were exchanged between Murray and the woman.
"This behaviour continued and about 10pm both went outside, taking their drinks with them.
"A further unpleasant verbal exchange took place and the victim threw the contents of her glass at him.
"She turned to walk away and Murray then threw his glass directly at her.
"It connected with the side of her neck and face, and the accused ran off.
"The victim went inside the hotel and was assisted by staff. She had an injury around the area of her eye that was bleeding heavily.
"She was treated at Hairmyres Hospital. There was no damage to her vision, but the wound around her eyelid required 11 sutures."
Murray's solicitor said he is a "family man" who is in full time employment.
Sheriff Linda Nicolson deferred sentence until next month for background reports and agreed to continue bail.
