A pensioner out fishing with friends was seriously injured when a sailfish jumped out of the water and stabbed her in the leg.
Katherine Perkins, 73, had been standing on a boat with her two companions Louis Toth, 75 and Dominic Bellezza, 77, as they attempted to haul in the 100lb fish for a picture.
A report from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the pair applied pressure to the gushing wound and headed back to port.
She was taken to hospital where she remains in an unknown condition, the New York Post reported.
The sheriff office said: “The sailfish jumped out of the water and stabbed Katherine in the groin area while she was standing next to the centre console."
