A woman has died and a man is seriously injured after being crushed by a falling tree in Tasmania's north-west, during severe weather.
Tasmania Police were called to a private property in Beulah, near Sheffield, around 5pm on Saturday, following reports two people were trapped under a tree.
The 54-year-old woman died after being struck while standing outside.
The man, also 54, was taken to the Launceston General Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Strong winds are lashing the state, prompting Tasmania Police to urge Tasmanians to stay inside and reconsider their need to travel on roads.
A wind gust of 115 kilometres per hour was recorded at Sheffield around the time of the incident.
Thousands have been left without power, with police responding to multiple callouts for fallen trees and powerlines across roads in the region.
As many as 14,000 properties were without power at one stage.
Destructive wind gusts of around 125 kilometres per hour were forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology.
Snow is also forecast to fall at altitudes as low as 400 metres.
