A woman has been killed and a one-year-old baby has been left fighting for its life in hospital after a two-car crash.
The driver, in her 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene on the A518 New Trench Road, near Telford, Shropshire, after the accident around 6:20pm on Saturday.
Her blue Mini was involved in a horror smash with a grey Fiat 500X which had the one-year-old on board.
Heroic bystanders, including an off-duty paramedic and an off-duty firefighter, performed CPR on the 19-month old little girl until emergency crews arrived.
She was then rushed off to hospital and remains in a critical condition at the paediatric major trauma centre at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
A man and woman in the same car were left trapped inside with a number of injuries.
But their condition is not believed to be life threatening.
West Mercia Police have now launched an appeal following the tragedy.
A spokesperson said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses after a woman sadly died following a collision in Newport.
"The collision happened on Saturday 12 February at about 6.20pm on the A518 New Trench Road, and involved a blue Mini and a grey Fiat 500X.
"Sadly the driver of the Mini, a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.
The occupants of the Fiat were all taken to hospital; two adults with serious injuries and a 19-month-old who is in a critical condition.
"Police would also like to thank members of the public who assisted with first aid at the scene until the emergency services arrived."
