Woman and infant dead after two-vehicle crash in remote Northern Territory

The Roper Highway stretches from Mataranka towards the Gulf of Carpentaria. (ABC Rural: Carmen Brown)

A 25-year-old woman and infant child have died after a head-on collision between a car and a truck in the remote Northern Territory on Friday afternoon.

NT Police said it received a report of the crash on the Roper Highway between Mataranka and Ngukurr shortly before 5pm.

The woman and child, who were passengers in the car, died at the scene

A 24-year-old woman was trapped in the car and required extraction, police said.

She and the 22-year-old male driver of the car were airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital.

The truck driver was not injured in the crash and both drivers tested negative for alcohol, police said.

Police said traffic diversions were in place and a crime scene was declared.

The crash location was about 80 kilometres east of the Stuart Highway intersection, according to police.

"Detectives from the Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating," NT Police said.

There have now been 31 deaths on Northern Territory roads this year, compared to 20 at the same time in 2021.
