Woman In U.S. Illegally Accused Of Abandoning Newborn In Dumpster

U.S. Supreme Court allows Texas law on suspected illegal immigrants to take effect

Authorities have confirmed that a woman accused of throwing her newborn baby into a dumpster in Houston is in the U.S. illegally. The woman, identified as Everilda Cux Ajtalam, 18, is a Guatemalan national who entered the country illegally as an unaccompanied minor.

According to reports, Ajtalam allegedly gave birth in a parking lot, placed the baby in a tied garbage bag, and left it in a dumpster. The incident was captured on surveillance video, leading to her arrest.

The Houston Police Department was alerted to the abandoned infant after residents reported hearing cries from the dumpster area. The newborn was promptly taken to Texas Children's Hospital and is now under the care of Child Protective Services, reported to be in good health.

During her court appearance, Harris County District Court Judge Veronica M. Nelson criticized Ajtalam for her actions, emphasizing the danger the child was exposed to given the circumstances. The judge set bail at $90,000, which was later raised to $200,000.

Ajtalam is currently held at the Harris County Jail on an immigration hold. The case has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the welfare of unaccompanied minors entering the U.S. illegally.
