A woman aged in her 80s has been found stabbed to death inside her home. A murder investigation has been launched following the incident in Newham, London.
The victim was found with multiple stab wounds. Emergency services were called to the home in Landseer Avenue, Manor Park, shortly before 10am this morning. The Metropolitan Police said the woman was found critically injured.
Despite efforts from paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene, reports The Mirror.
"The woman’s family have been informed. A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course," a spokesperson for the Met Police said. An urgent investigation was launched and officers searched the surrounding area. A man in his 30s was detained nearby a short time later. He has been taken into police custody.
"At this early stage, it is thought that the woman and the arrested man were known to each other. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."
Detectives from Specialist Crime (Homicide) are leading the investigation. As well as Met Police officers and London Ambulance Service paramedics, London’s Air Ambulance also responded to the knife attack.
A crime scene is now in place in Landseer Avenue while detectives investigate the stabbing. Any witnesses or anyone with information that may assist the investigation are asked to call 101, ref 2126/02apr.
