Woman horrified at seeing man with machete sat in her car after night of violence

A woman has told of the frightening moment that she saw a young man armed with a machete sat in her car as he went on a violent wrecking spree.

Police were called to the area at around 8pm on February 7 after reports that a man with a machete was attacking cars in the street.

Images of the Huddersfield street show the trail of damage left behind with at least six cars with windows smashed or damaged, Yorkshire Live reports.

It is also alleged that the man earlier threatened two members employees at a nearby Co-op supermarket before smashing several car windows down the street.

Those living in the area have spoken out at their horror as some have been left unable to work.

A 52-year-old woman said: "Around 8.30pm I was sitting watching TV at my sister's home on Carr Street when we heard a car alarm go off.

"We ignored it at first but when it went off the second time I went to take a look and there was this man sitting in the driver's seat of my car that he had broken into. We called the police.

"He got out and ran into Gorse Street and tried to get into a blue car and when that failed a white van. The next thing I saw he was getting arrested."

Another man said: "I'm a taxi driver and I can't use my vehicle today because he has broken into it and smashed the driver's window."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police received reports of an incident on Smiths Avenue, Marsh, Huddersfield, at 8:23pm last night, in which a man carrying a machete was acting in a threatening manner and causing damage to several vehicles.

"Officers were deployed to the scene and the man was arrested nearby."

Co-op has been contacted for contact.
