Woman hit partner on head with meat cleaver in drink-fuelled attack

A woman struck her partner on the head with a meat cleaver after becoming enraged that she could not get more alcohol.

The woman had found herself dependent on drink for ten years after suffering from grief at the tragic birth of her stillborn daughter.

Victoria Akrill, 36 and of Hull, admitted to wounding with intent at Hull Crown Court.

Prosecutor, Philip Standfast, told the court on January 3 that an ambulance was called to an address at 6pm following reports of a woman carrying a meat cleaver, Hull Live reports.

They were led into the address where they found the complainant, Akrill's partner, with blood on the side of his neck.

Akrill was in the living room with 'dilated and bulging eyes', she appeared to be under the influence.

The complainant was not bleeding heavily and his injuries did not appear to be life threatening. He had a C-shape cut on the back of his head, it was 1.5cm long and appeared to be 4mm deep.

Akrill told the paramedics he had been hit by a meat cleaver and pointed out the said meat cleaver to them. She had a 7cm long cut on her arm herself. She told paramedics she 'wanted to kill him, but not really because she loved him'.

She said they had a 'tiff' and the complainant drank five litres worth of vodka, the paramedics did not see any bottles but Akrill said the bottles had been taken out. She claimed they had an argument about going to get more alcohol and admitted it was all her fault.

The court is unclear of the series of incidents as the victim did not provide his side of the story to the prosecution. Dale Brook, mitigating, said because of this, the defendant could have 'chanced it with a trial' however, chose to provide an honest guilty plea instead.

He added that the defendant had been struggling with alcohol for the past 10 years after her daughter was still-born. After the offence, Akrill had spent five months in custody awaiting sentencing, Mr Brook said this has had a massive positive impact on her as she has decided to turn her life around in there.

She has become an enhanced prisoner with responsibility over the gardens and has been sober during her time in prison.

He added that this was a difficult and troubled relationship where both parties had a dependency on alcohol. Akrill has no intentions of returning to the relationship.

Judge Sophie McKone told Akrill: "You hit your partner with a meat cleaver, the exact circumstances are unclear but your plea accepts you hit him and you did not act in self-defence as you hit first.

"You caused him a serious laceration to his head using a dangerous weapon after you became angry because you could not get more drink."

Taking Akrill's guilty plea as well as her previous convictions related to assault and battery into account, Judge McKone sentenced her to 43 months in prison.
