Woman had no idea she was committing driving offence until police stopped her

A driver was baffled when police pulled her over and told her she was breaking the Highway Code by driving.

The bewildered woman was asked to pull over after she was spotted driving her car with a frozen windscreen that was completely impairing her visibility in yesterday's (Tuesday) icy conditions.

A casualty reduction officer (CRO) from Surrey’s Road Policing Unit stopped the surprised driver and reported her for an offence.

But according to the local police, she couldn’t understand why she was being reported.

The night prior to the offence, local police issued a hazard alert for Surrey motorists and warned them that sub-zero temperatures could lead to difficult driving conditions.

Following the event, police tweeted about the driver’s frozen windscreen yesterday morning - and it appeared to strike a chord with motorists.

The tweet has went on to be liked over 1,700 times and had more than 220 retweets.

Jon Power tweeted: “I had someone just like that almost hit me on my bike the other day, as they pulled straight out onto a roundabout in front of me.

“Obviously couldn’t see a thing out of the 2 inch square gap they’d bothered to scrape off.”

Jason Ingham added: "Needs licence taking away if she doesn't realise it is an offence not to be able to see where you are going."

And a third person replied: "How on earth did the driver even make it 100 yards down the road?? May as well drive with their eyes closed."

Drivers are required to clear snow and ice from every window of their car before they embark on their journey in adverse conditions.

Rule 229 of the Highway Code also dictates that drivers must demist and clear all mirrors; clean all lights; ensure their registration plates are visible, and remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other drivers.

If you have an accident because you didn’t clean your windows properly, then your insurance company might also find you at fault if making a claim and you may not receive a pay-out.
