It’s not shocking that in some workplaces, there is a specific dress code, whether it’s due to safety, health reasons or simply to look professional. However, there is also quite a common occurrence when employees get scolded by their managers for their work outfits, when, in most cases, everything fits the requirements.
One Reddit user maliciously complied online after being told by an assistant manager that she needed to dress better – well, she took it seriously and the next day arrived looking like “Audrey Hepburn: The Little Black Dress”.

A few days ago, a Reddit user shared her story to the Malicious Compliance community telling her story of how, after being told to ‘dress better’ at work, she did a full transformation and looked extra fancy the following day, which made her manager and assistant manager furious. The post caught a lot of attention and collected 3K upvotes and over 200 comments.
The original poster (OP) started her story by sharing that she works in a high-end store with a specific dress code, to which she always sticks and has never had any issues. However, one day, she got pulled back by the assistant manager (ASM) and got told she needed to ‘dress better’ and look ‘less homeless’. Confused, she tried asking her manager what that meant, but was simply told to listen to the ASM.
OP noted that that night, she went online, found everything she needed, and the following day went to the mall and bought everything – blue dress, white gloves, fake pearl necklace and bracelet. She added that she spent that night doing her hair, ironing her dress, cleaning the pearls and practicing makeup. She woke up at 5:30 in the morning, did her hair, makeup, nails and got dressed.
The woman walked into work smiling when her manager and ASM immediately pulled her into the back and yelled at her. “I don’t look homeless now, do I?” the woman answered. She also added that customers only wanted to talk to her as she looked fancy and it was a great day!
Community members absolutely loved this story, encouraged OP to keep doing it and shared their personal similar situations. “My favorite part is that you loved how you looked in the process of shoving their stupid comment back at them. Well done,” one user wrote. “It would have been funny if you copied the way they dressed and they still complained about it,” another added.

But let’s talk a little bit about dress codes at work – some people like them as they enjoy looking professional or not having to worry how ‘fancy’ they need to look, while others hate it due to maybe them having a completely different style or feeling uncomfortable in professional attire.
However, Indeed lists quite a few benefits of having a dress code at work and the first one is eliminating subjectivity and miscommunication. The definitions of phrases such as “casual” and “professional” by employees can differ, thus it can be helpful to have clear rules to assist prevent these issues. Also it helps to ensure fair treatment.
Moreover, it demonstrates professionalism and encourages productivity. A more driven and effective team, as well as a boost of confidence, can result from all employees dressing professionally. And, of course – in some industries – adhering to safety standards.
However, while there are quite a few benefits of a dress code at work, not everybody enjoys it. Career Minds notes that a survey shows a staggering 33% of employees stated that if their employer enforced a clothing code, they would resign from their positions or decline an offer.
Additionally, they discovered that individuals would decline a $5,000 raise in order to be able to dress more casually.
