Woman finds touching note inside book charity shop book - and is searching for owner

A woman has uncovered a long-lost note inside a charity shop book - and has made it her mission to track down the recipient.

Rose Farmer, 46, from Gilbert in Arizona, America, was shopping at Goodwill with her mum and seven-year-old daughter when she came across a copy of 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' by Carson McCullers.

She opened the book to check its condition, and out tumbled a handwritten note. It read: "Believe, Trent - Believe. You are loved and respected! So let's get going. The ride may be bumpy but we will get there. When you believe in you as much as I do, you will be there. - Dad."

The note was written on a piece of paper from the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, in California, which is more than 700 miles away from the Goodwill shop. Rose said on New York Post: "I thought, 'Wow, what an amazing, special note.

"It's about overcoming any obstacle by believing in yourself — and also having someone believe in you.

"Especially since it was his dad. Who knows what Trent was going through at the point that his dad wrote him this note, you know? It really spoke to me at the moment."

Wanting to return the note to its rightful owner, Rose bought the book for $2 (£1.60) before posting a picture of it on her local community Facebook page.

She said: "It just received so many likes and comments from people. Everybody just seemed really touched by it."

Relaying some of the comments she received, she added: "Someone said, 'I'm not Trent, but this note spoke to me.' Someone else said, 'My son's name is Trent and it's as if this note was written just for him."

Expanding her search, Rose reached out to the hotel named on the piece of paper, hoping they'd be able to share it on their Facebook page too.

"The note was pretty new, so I thought maybe it was somebody who went there and they just took the paper home," she said.

"But, you just never know. It could have been somebody from across the country."

She started to question whether Trent ever saw the note considering it was tucked into the back pages, believing it might have passed him by before the book was donated.

She added: "Did he not know the note was in there? Maybe he never got to read that message."
