Woman finds 1994 Tesco receipt and the prices come as a surprise

A woman was intrigued after finding a receipt from nearly 30 years ago.

Liverpool-based marketing manager Jess Corcoran took to Twitter to share a receipt she discovered in the pocket of a trench coat she bought from second-hand retailer Vinted. The Tesco receipt, dated February 15, 1994, listed purchases totalling £5.67 from the Bar Hill store in Cambridge.

The receipt shows four pints of milk cost 84p, self-raising flour was 72p a bag, table salt cost 38p and Red Mountain (presumably the instant coffee brand) cost 1.59 a jar, but was on a two-for-one deal.

If you were to buy the same products today, through Tesco online, four pints of milk would cost £1.45, while a 1.5kg bag of self-raising flour can be bought as cheaply as 58p - less than the 1994 shopper paid. 750g of Saxa table salt would cost £1.30, whereas the cheapest instant coffee on Tesco's site is their own-brand, which costs £3.20 for 100g.

Between 1994 and today, the price of four pints of milk has gone up by 72.6%. Inflation is currently at 9.9% - its highest rate for four decades, as prices have sky-rocketed over the past year.

Jess' tweet read: "Bought a trench coat from Vinted a few weeks ago, and just put my hand in the pocket tonight. Look at this old shopping receipt from @Tesco which is older than me".

People replying to Jess expressed their surprise at the prices. Twitter user Ruth Writes said: "A four-pint of milk for 84p! What a time 1994 was!." Also replying was @halfeden, who expressed a similar sentiment, saying "Omg look how cheap milk was!".
