A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after her wheelchair was struck by a van in a horror smash in north London.

The victim, in her 40s, was crossing Tottenham High Road by Bruce Grove at 3pm on Monday.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing her wheelchair crushed under the wheels of the vehicle.

The driver stopped at the busy junction and was not arrested.

Police said the woman is still critical in hospital after the horror collision in front of shoppers on the busy road.

A Met spokesman said: “Police were called following reports of a collision in High Road, Tottenham, N17 involving a van and a woman in a wheelchair.

“Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended and the woman, believed to be in her 40s, was taken to hospital where she remains in a life-threatening condition.

“Significant road closures are in place as emergency services respond.

“The van driver stopped at the scene. No arrests.”

The high street was blocked off in both directions as investigators scoured the scene.
