Woman 'feared dead' after being swept into Scots river as community waits for news


A woman is feared dead after going into a flooded river to rescue her dog.

The second day of searches for her was being scaled down last night after she was swept away in Aberdeenshire on Friday.

The woman, who is in her 60s, had been out walking her dog near the River Don at the village of Monymusk, where she is from.

Local minister Reverend Euan Glen said: “There is a lot of ­sadness. We are all watching and waiting for news.

“There is care and concern for her family and friends and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

Emergency services were called to the river when the woman, who hasn’t been named, was reported to be in difficulty.

When rescuers arrived there was no sign of her or her dog.

Inspector Rory Campbell said yesterday: “Conditions are tricky and dangerous and I am ­appealing to the public to stay away from flooded areas. “

The Scottish Government’s resilience committee met ­yesterday for a second day to provide support for areas affected by the bad weather.

SNP Keith Brown said: “Although the situation appears to be improving, we still have flood warnings in place so please take extra care if you are out and about and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.”

In Brechin, Angus, river levels on the South Esk reached their highest on record, while in ­Ballater the Dee reached its ­second highest level.

Homes and businesses in the area witnessed a major clean-up while several roads were blocked by flood water and ­abandoned cars.

The wet weather caused major disruption to travel, with roads and rail services affected, with centres set up for those unable to stay in their homes.

Train services were still being impacted after what ScotRail described as “extreme rainfall”.

In ­Edinburgh, part of the Crewe Toll roundabout in the west of the city was submerged.

There was flooding yesterday between junctions 2 and 3 of the M9 in West Lothian.

A third day of rain is expected today, particularly in the north east. Affected areas include Angus, Perth and Kinross, ­Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Alex Burkill of the Met Office said: “Sunday is going to be pretty wet for much of Scotland. ­Further heavy rain will lead to flooding.”

Snow was forecast to fall ­overnight in areas including Cairngorms National Park, Skye and Fort William, with more expected during the week.
