A person followed a woman onto a Loop CTA platform and then fatally stabbed her early Saturday in the Loop, authorities said.

Chicago Police Public Transportation Section Commander Joe Bird called it “an isolated incident” at the Adams/Wabash L station, but no one was in custody for the downtown homicide.

Officers were called about 1:20 a.m. to the 200 block of South Wabash Avenue, where they found the 26-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds and a blood trail from the station nearby, Bird said during a news conference hours after the attack.

She was taken to Stroger Hospital with wounds to the abdomen, chest and left arm, and later died.

Surveillance video showed a male following the woman as she walked up the station’s stairs, Bird said.

He approached her on the platform and stopped her as she walked toward an arriving train, Bird said.

She tried to move away when the attacker stopped her from boarding, but he pushed her multiple times, pulled out a “metal object” and then stabbed her repeatedly, Bird said.

The woman was able to push herself away before running back down to the street and collapsing.

A possible motive for the attack was unclear. No one was in custody Saturday afternoon.

“We believe this is an isolated incident,” Bird said. “Our detectives in the Public Transportation Section are working closely with CTA security and safety to sweep through evidence, so we can apprehend the offender responsible for this tragic stabbing.”
