A young Australian woman found herself stuck upside down in a crevice between two rocks after slipping and falling while trying to retrieve her phone, according to a report.
Matilda Campbell, 23, was backpacking through the New South Wales Hunter Valley with friends when she dropped her phone. Attempting to recover it, Campbell slipped and fell nearly 10 feet down a rock crevice, as reported by ABC Australia.
Campbell's friends attempted to free her, but were unable to do so. With no cell service in the area, Campbell's friends were forced to leave her hanging by her feet as they trekked to another location in order to call for help.
Campbell had been stuck between the two boulders for about an hour when she was located by first responders in the Cessnock Volunteer Rescue Association and Rural Fire Service.
"She was such a trooper," Peter Watts, a NSW Ambulance special operations and rescue paramedic, told ABC Australia. "I would have been beside myself stuck in that sort of situation, but when we were there she was calm, she was collected, anything we asked her to do she was able to do it to help us get her out."
"I was very impressed with how chilled she was," he continued.
Numerous heavy boulders had to be removed from the opening Campbell fell into in order to retrieve her.
"NSW Ambulance Specialist Rescue Paramedic Peter Watts worked with a multidisciplinary team to remove several heavy boulders to create a safe access point. With care, a hardwood frame was built to ensure stability while rescuers worked," said NSW Ambulance in a post on their Facebook page. "With both feet now accessible, the team faced the challenge of navigating the patient out through a tight 'S' bend over the course of an hour. It took teamwork and a specialized Tirfor winch to move a massive 500 kg boulder."
Campbell, who thanked her rescue team in a post on her social media, verified that her phone could not be retrieved.
"Thank you to the team who saved me," she wrote. "You guys are literally lifesavers ... too bad about the phone though."
