A tragic incident occurred in the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, where a 31-year-old German national lost her life in a shark attack. The attack, which resulted in the woman losing a leg, took place on Monday and was confirmed by a spokesperson for Spain’s Guardia Civil on Wednesday.

Following the attack, the victim was airlifted to a hospital on the Canary island of Gran Canaria for medical treatment. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save her, she passed away at the hospital. The location of the shark attack was approximately 514 kilometers south-southwest of Gran Canaria and 180 kilometers west of the city of Dakhla, Western Sahara, as reported by Spain’s sea search and rescue agency Sasemar.

Reports indicate that the woman suffered a heart attack after the shark attack, leading to her untimely death. She was part of a group traveling on a catamaran that departed from the city of Las Palmas on Gran Canaria on Saturday. The incident occurred while she was swimming beside the catamaran, according to sources.

Shark attacks in the vicinity of the Canary Islands are considered rare, with only six confirmed incidents on record, as noted by the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File. Despite this tragic event, the Canary Islands remain a popular holiday destination known for their pleasant year-round climate, attracting visitors from around the world.
