Woman dies in M1 tree crash that shut road for hours

A woman has died after a crash that shut the M1 for several hours. Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway of the M1 after a report that a black Ford Mondeo came off the motorway and hit a tree between junctions 21a and 22 shortly before 10.45am on Sunday, May 8.

The occupants – a male driver and female passenger – were taken to hospital and the road was closed for several hours. The passenger, in her 30s, died as a result of her injuries yesterday evening, police have confirmed

Police have said the driver remains in hospital in a stable condition. Detective Constable Charlotte Wright, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Leicestershire Police, said: “Sadly our inquiries are now centred around a fatal collision.

“While we have spoken to a number of people, I would still ask that anyone who was travelling on the motorway yesterday morning and saw what happened or who has dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

“I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the black Ford Mondeo prior to the collision occurring.” You can pass on information by visiting https://www.leics.police.uk/ro/report/rti/rti-beta-2.1/report-a-road-traffic-incident/ and quoting incident 213 of 8 May. Alternatively call 101.
