A woman has died after she was rescued from a house fire in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A woman, man and child were all in the burning house in South London while the fire was going on.

They were all rushed to hospital, but the woman sadly died.

The London Fire Brigade was called out to a house fire at a home on Alderwood Road, Eltham.

Crews sped to the scene of the burning home at 4.37am and the fire was brought under control at 6.01am on Thursday.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Half of the ground floor and most of the first floor of a mid-terraced house were damaged by fire.

"The roof of the building was destroyed. A man and a child left the building before the Brigade arrived.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman via an internal staircase. They were all taken to hospital, where the woman sadly later died.

"Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Eltham, Sidcup, Lee Green, Bexley and Plumstead fire stations attended the scene."

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
