Woman dies after being hit by police car on Christmas Eve

A woman in her 20s has died on Christmas Eve after being hit by a police car. The Liverpool Echo reported live from the police incident on Shiel Road in Liverpool just after 8pm on Saturday.

Police, fire and ambulance services were all at the scene following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a police car.

Merseyside police confirmed the sad news and said the woman’s next of kin have been informed and her family are being supported by specially trained officers. Formal identification has not yet been made. Road closures were in place while emergency services attended the incident.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has also been informed and have attended the scene.

Merseyside police said they are appealing for any witnesses, CCTV and dash camera footage which may assist the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured anything on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact (0151) 777 5747, or via @MerPolCC on Twitter or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook, with reference 857 of Saturday 24 December.

The Echo spoke to witnesses on Christmas Eve who reported seeing "a load of police" but did not know what happened. One eyewitness said they saw a woman being hit by a car.

One person said: "It's horrific. It's Christmas Eve. Whatever it is is looks bad, It's heart-breaking."

The Echo was live on the incident at the time which you can see here.
