Woman charged after allegedly running from fatal five-vehicle crash on Adelaide's Port River Expressway

A 26-year-old woman has died in a crash involving several cars and a B-double truck at Gillman in Adelaide's north-west.

Another woman who allegedly was driving one of the cars and ran from the scene has been charged with multiple offences, including causing death by dangerous driving, but is yet to appear in court.

Emergency services were called to the Port River Expressway about 9:35pm yesterday following reports of a five-vehicle crash.

"It will be alleged the driver of a Holden Cruze travelling west collided with the rear of a red Toyota Prius which caused the Prius to cross onto the eastern carriageway into the path of a Kia Cerato and a B-double," SA Police said.

"The Kia Cerato also collided with a Toyota HiAce van."

The North Haven woman who died was a passenger in the Prius, whose driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Another person in the vehicle was also injured, as was an 18-year-old woman from Broadview who was driving the Kia.

Witnesses told police the driver of the Holden Cruze involved in the crash ran from her car.

Police said the accused, Port Adelaide woman Carlie Eileen Richards, was located nearby and taken to hospital for an assessment.

She has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, three counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving, aggravated due care, leaving the scene of an accident, fail to exchange details after an accident and resisting police.

The 38-year-old had been expected to appear in court today, but the prosecution told the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court that the accused was "quite unwell" and needed time to stabilise.

The matter will return to court on November 16.

The expressway was closed overnight and into the morning, but reopened at 1pm.
