A Texas jury has ruled 37-year-old Desiree Hamm as the first woman in state history to be designated a Sexually Violent Predator.
Hamm, a San Diego resident, used online "role-playing games" to manipulate and groom two teenage victims back in 2009, according to the Comal County District Attorney's Office. What started as innocent interactions quickly turned into a sinister scheme of control, authorities said.
Hamm spent hundreds of hours on the phone and computer with the girls, conditioning them to believe the game was a reality. She used webcams to exert dominance and monitor her victims' every move, according to District Attorneys per CBS2.
Forensic psychologist Dr. Jason Dunham told the jury that Hamm does not fit the typical profile of female sex offenders. Instead, he described her akin to a "cult leader" with an alarming ability to control and deceive. Dunham testified that she has an uncanny ability to manipulate vulnerable individuals, including children, and warned Hamm has a high likelihood of reoffending.
Since Texas enacted its Sexually Violent Predator law in 1999, Hamm is the first woman to be given the designation. She will be transferred to the custody of the Texas Civil Commitment Office upon her release from prison.
Under civil commitment, Hamm will receive long-term sex offender treatment and supervision at the Texas Civil Commitment Center in Littlefield. She will remain in the program indefinitely, with mandatory evaluations every two years to assess her risk level, authorities said.
