An eight-year-old girl has died after a “suspicious” house fire in West Yorkshire in the early hours of Wednesday in which a woman was also killed, police said.

A 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition after the blaze at a property in Huddersfield. The 31-year-old woman died from her injuries earlier on Wednesday after being rescued from the house with the two children and taken to hospital.

The cause of the fire, which was reported to emergency services at 2.24am, is being treated as suspicious, West Yorkshire police said. A crime scene is still in place at the semi-detached property on Leeds Road.

Earlier, the police said they were not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. DCI James Entwistle, from the homicide and major inquiry team, said: “Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by this tragic incident. Specially trained officers are supporting the family.

“While we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, we are still keen to speak to anyone who was in the area this morning, who may have seen something to come forward with information. A scene remains in place while inquiries are carried out.”
