An elderly Australian woman was hit and killed by her own car after exiting the vehicle following a collision she allegedly caused, according to a report.
The 75-year-old woman exited her car on Monday morning in the parking lot of the Kambah Village shops in the Canberra suburb of Tuggeranong, after colliding with a taxi. She began to help the passenger of the taxi with a stroller when her own car rolled forward and struck her.
Multiple bystanders rushed to the woman's aid, including some who attempted to perform CPR on her, reported the Canberra Times.
"It was nearly, probably about 15 to 20 people that were surrounding her there," said witness Jack Roche, a server at a nearby bakery.
"This time of year, it's very sad for an accident like this to happen."
Both women, the driver and the taxi passenger, were treated for injuries at the scene by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics. The elderly driver was then transported to the hospital, where she was later declared dead.
"About 10:20 a.m. this morning ... police and emergency services responded to a single vehicle collision in a car park on Marconi Crescent in Kambah," a police statement said, according to Canberra Times.
"The pedestrian received only minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment," it continued.
"I quickly ran because I didn't know what was happening," said cab driver Gagandeep Singh, describing the impact of the other car hitting his taxi.
"I saw the [other] car was quickly trying to help," he continued. "I saw the lady was on the ground."
ACT Policing's Major Collision Team is continuing to investigate the incident.
