Woman, 39, arrested on suspicion of murder after pensioner, 93, found dead at Manchester home

An investigation has been launched after a 93-year-old woman was found dead inside her home in Manchester.

Police have arrested a 39-year-old woman on suspicion of murder after the pensioner’s body was discovered at the Stockport property on Wednesday morning.

The case in south-east Manchester has also been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to previous contact with the deceased, whose identity currently remains unknown.

Officers were called to an address on Altrincham Road, Gatley at around 9.38am where they found the elderly victim inside her house.

After the pensioner’s body was discovered, officers detained a woman who remains in police custody.

A neighbour told the Manchester Evening News that it was all “going off” in the street, with fire engines, ambulances and police cars all present.

A cordon has been put in place around the victim's home while a probe into the alleged murder continues.

An increased police presence will also be in place in the Altrincham area of the city for the time being.

Greater Manchester Police described the death as “isolated” and assured the public that there is “no wider threat”.

Detective Inspector Adam Hitchen, the senior investigating officer, said: “The priority for our investigation is understanding the full circumstances which led to this tragic incident and getting justice for the victim.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, who are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.”

A GMP spokesman said: “Officers were called to an address on Altrincham Road at 9.38am. Sadly, a 93-year-old woman was found deceased in the property.

“Police attended and following initial enquiries at the scene, a 39-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder. She remains in police custody.”

A crime scene remains in place and local neighbourhood officers will be providing reassurance in the area over the coming days.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting log number 726 of April 16 2025, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
