A 32-year-old woman has died just one day after her release from prison.
Jaymielee Crow was found dead on the morning after her release from HMP Low Newton, near Durham. She had just finished serving a 22 weeks' imprisonment for shoplifting and assaulting emergency workers when she was released on June 21, 2022.
A Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) investigation into her death reported that Crow had a history of substance misuse and had been in prison on a number of occasions. She did well in the prison environment, but faced challenges with life in the community and had requested support with this.

When she was sentenced on April 6, 2022, she had only been released from prison seven weeks earlier and had indicated to the court through her solicitor that she wanted a custodial sentence as she felt safer in prison.
The investigation, which is conducted for deaths that occur within 14 days of a person's release from prison, found that during Crow's time at HMP Low Newton she had asked on several occasions for medication to help stop her cravings when she was released. However, this was not actioned.
The report concluded she relapsed as soon as she was released and died from the toxic effects of morphine - ruled to be possibly heroin or diamorphine - as well as cocaine on June 22, 2022.
