Woman, 23, dies after being hit by beer bottle outside favourite football stadium

A young football fan has tragically died after she was hit by a beer bottle after a brawl erupted outside a stadium.

Gabriela Anelli Marchiano, 23, arrived to Allianz Parque stadium to support her favourite team in Brazil on Saturday.

However, she sadly didn't make it into the stadium after she fell victim to a fight between Palmeiras and Flamengo fans before kick-off in the state of São Paulo.

Police were forced to use tear gas to break up the violent crowd outside of the venue, where Gabriela was queuing to get in.

The 23-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital to have emergency surgery after she endured a severed artery in her neck.

Despite the help of paramedics, she sadly passed away two days later on the morning of July 10.

Her family have since paid an emotional tribute and said Palmeiras "was her life, it was her joy, the fans were her friends."

A spokesperson for the Palmeiras supporters' association said a day before her passing: "There was a fight before yesterday's game outside the Allianz and Gabriela was hit in the neck by shards from a bottle, hitting an artery.

"She had to undergo surgery and urgently needs a blood donation."

Following her death, they released an update and said: "We deeply regret the death of fan Gabriela Anelli, hit by a bottle near Allianz Parque before the game against Flamengo on Saturday.

"We cannot accept that a 23-year-old girl is a victim of barbarism in an environment that should provide entertainment."

Gabriela's family said she was a "fighter" and revealed she had to endure heart, kidney and lung operations as a child.

Her heartbroken mother Dilcilene dos Santos said: "They took our little girl away from us."

"Gabriela was always my light, my life, my little girl, a fighter since she was a little girl with health problems, she fought until the last moment in the ICU.

"In the end, it wasn't her health problem that killed her, it was a bottle."

Father Ettore Marchiano commented: "We don't have words right now. We never leave the house with the thought that she will never come back."

Gabriela's brother Felipe Marchiano said his sister frequently visited home matches with her parents.

Her cousin Mariana Anelli added: "The family's pain is immeasurable. I just can't believe there's so much evil in this world and that justice is so flawed in Brazil.

"Our family does not deserve to go through this mourning."

A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the incident.

The man, who has been identified as Leonardo Felipe Xavier Santiago, confessed to throwing the bottle but denied intending to hit the victim.

He is being held in preventive custody at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
