A 21-year-old university student died after a nose job left her lungs full of blood.
Karen Julieth Cárdenas Uribe suffered six cardiorespiratory arrests following the rhinoplasty surgery.
She had undergone the operation at a clinic in Bucaramanga, Santander Department, Colombia, on Saturday and left the clinic soon after.
But as soon as she arrived home she passed out. Her family managed to revive her but she fainted again.
Concerned, they rushed her to hospital where doctors discovered her lungs were full of blood. She died after the sixth cardiorespiratory arrest.
Karen was in the last semester of her psychology course at Pontifical Bolivarian University.
Speaking about the rhinoplasty operation, her devastated brother - who was not named - said: “She was admitted at 5am and the surgery started at 7am. It lasted until 1.30pm.
"At 2pm she was already with us and she fainted just a few minutes later.
“We immediately managed to revive her and she woke up, but perhaps the effects of the medication were already wearing off and she fainted again.”
Concerned relatives contacted the surgeon who carried out the nose job and they said he advised them to bring her back to the same clinic.
However, due to Karen's worsening condition, her family decided to take her to the Los Comuneros Clinic, situated closer to their home in the neighbourhood of San Francisco.
According to the victim’s brother, she was admitted to the ICU where doctors managed to revive her again, but she kept passing out and was eventually intubated.
He added: “After they intubated her, they saw she had a considerable amount of blood in her lungs, trachea and oesophagus and she couldn’t breathe.
“They did what they could, but after six cardiorespiratory arrests she passed away.”
The family said they will file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office to establish if any parties are culpable of medical negligence.
The brother said: “We want justice, she was a healthy woman. She never had any serious health problems and she was in good physical shape.”
The investigation is ongoing.
In December a man died after "cowboy" surgeons botched his hair transplant in India, his heartbroken mother has revealed.
Athar Rasheed, 30, who worked as a TV executive in New Delhi was convinced into the surgery after taking up a special offer last year.
He may have paid as little as £150 for the treatment which usually costs thousands, local media has claimed.
Mum Asiya Begum, 62, said her beloved son was trying to "boost his confidence" by undergoing the transplant - which has gained popularity across the world in recent years.
But tragically, the surgery went wrong and the 30-year-old spent months dying a slow and painful death from sepsis.
