Wolves sack Gary O'Neil after Ipswich defeat leaves them 19th in Premier League

Wolves have sacked Gary O’Neil.

O’Neil has been dismissed after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich at Molineux left Wolves down in 19th in the Premier League and four points from safety.

He is the third Premier League manager to lose his job this season after Steve Cooper at Nottingham Forest and Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said: “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”

O’Neil guided Wolves to 14th in the Premier League last season but they have just nine points from their 16 games this season and only Southampton are below them.

Wolves lost to Ipswich after Jack Taylor scored an injury-time winner at Molineux.

O'Neil was unhappy with both goals his side conceded.

He called the first "unacceptable" for the ease with which Liam Delap barged past Nelson Semedo before crossing and then claimed his players had ignored instructions by swapping positions to allow Taylor the space to score the winner with a header from a corner.
