Wolves make managerial decision after former Liverpool coach turns down job

Steve Davis will remain in caretaker charge of Wolves until 2023 after former Liverpool youth coach Michael Beale turned down an offer to take over at the Midlands club.

Ex-Crewe Alexandra boss Davis has taken interim charge at Molineux since the sacking of Bruno Lage at the start of October, but those in charge at the club have seen two potential successors turn down the permanent role since. Former Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui was the club's first-choice but opted against a move to England for family reasons.

That moved them on to Beale, who had spent time as a coach with Liverpool's youth set-up - where he nurtured the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold - before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers and then Aston Villa. The 42-year-old took on his first managerial role with Queens Park Rangers in June and is enjoying an excellent start to life at Loftus Road, with his side top of the Championship.

Such performances have caught the eye of Premier League teams, but Wolves ' tempting offer of top-flight football was rejected in a surprising - and unusual, in modern football - show of loyalty.

"When I joined the club in the summer, I found an ownership that was really honest about what they wanted and were giving me my first opportunity to be a manager," Beale told the club's Twitter account. "I took that task on with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement and they enabled me to recruit some players I really wanted to work with.

"It is the aim for me to go and work in the Premier League, like it is for all of our players, and the idea is to try to go there ourselves as a group. If we are doing well, there will be speculation or a temptation.

"Wolves are a fantastic football club and it was a real privilege to be asked to go and speak to them but I didn't think it was the right moment because I entered into an agreement here and integrity and loyalty are a real big thing for me.

"I have been all in here and I have asked others to be all in so I can't be the first person to run away from the ship."
